Indica/Sativa/Hybrid: What's the difference? Which strain should I try?

Posted by Aaron Stimson on

There are many commonly reported facts, and myths about each Sativa, Hybrid, and Indica strains.  Here were going to take a more in-depth look at each by discussing the visual differences, effects, and potency of each!

Sativa - Sativa Dominant strains are typically associated with having a "head high" and giving users a rush of energy.  While this is mostly true, it isn't always the case.  Some sativa strains actually produce a very strong body high, and even will put seasoned smokers to sleep if consuming a large amount.  Many people fear Sativa Dominant strains because they state that it gives anxiety.  Many that experience this effect are usually anxious type personalities so a sativa doesn't usually gel well with that type of person.  However, if a small amount is consumed it can be the opposite... low doses of sativa can give creative bursts of energy, clear headed feelings, and reduction in anxiety.

We find here at the Pottery that a low dose of sativa is a much more productive, and enjoyable experience!  Sativa dominant strains usually don't have as high of THC percentages, and usually are much more fluffy in appearance than its Indica relatives.

Common Sativa Strains: - Jack Herer, Blue Dream, Lamb's Bread, Strawberry Cough, White Buffalo, Sour Diesel, Durban Poison, Maui Wowie, Tangie, Super Lemon Haze, Super Silver Haze, Green Crack, Black Jack, and Hawaiian Fire.

Indica - Indica strains are commonly associated with the infamous "body high" or "couch lock."  These are not myths, and many can vouch for the regular indica knock out that results in the slumber of a lifetime.  Not all indica strains will have this effect though.  Many have some sativa like effects that are combined with the heavy body feeling that indica strains provide.  This is usually from indica strains that have high THC percentages.  Indica strains are not usually associated with being focused and feeling motivated... it's more of a good time inside by yourself or hanging out with a small group of friends.  So if you have the night off, an indica can be great for pain relief, and insomnia.

Common Indica Strains: - Northern Lights, OG Kush, Blueberry, Blackberry Kush, Akasha OG, Purple Punch, Grandaddy Purple, Death Star, Lava Cake, Lavender Cookies, King Louis, Sensi Star, SFV OG, True OG, Blue Zkittlez, Jupiter OG, Strawberry Cheesecake, Do Si Dos, and Grape Ape.

Hybrid - Hybrid Strains usually bring us the best of both worlds!  If you like the body high associated with Indica, and are a mild fan of a head high that a sativa produces, a hybrid is a perfect balance of these effects.  Some hybrids can lean more sativa, or more indica, depending on the genetics.  Today most hybrids are labeled as 50/50 hybrids, sativa dominant hybrid, or indica dominant hybrid.  Were mostly speaking about 50/50 hybrids here, which are great for any setting!

Common Hybrid Strains: - Blue Dream, Girl Scout Cookies, Pineapple Express, Bloodwalker, Chemdawg, White Widow, Mazar X Blueberry OG, White Tahoe, Platinum Cookies, Sherbet, Gelato, Mochi, Thin Mint GSC, Cherry AK, Hell's Fire, and Space Queen
